The Hays and Skarda Connection

  Sterling A. Jones A. W. Skarda

In 1906 two unrelated families, the Jones and the Skarda, pioneered Eastern New Mexico and ultimately settled in Clovis. In 1916 Sterling A. Jones was granted a charter and organized the Citizens' Bank of Clovis. In 1924 Jones and Albert W. Skarda, of Farmer's State Bank, merged the two banks as Citizens' Bank of Clovis. S. A. Jones was the President and A. W. Skarda was the Cashier. After Mr. Jones' death in 1940, Mr. Skarda became the President. Both men were prominent civic and political members of the community and state.

Fast forward two generations. In 1998 while attending the Southwest Car Wash Association Regional meeting in Santa Fe, NM, Bill Hays, grandson of S. A. Jones, met fellow car washer, Lamar Skarda, grandson of A. W. Skarda. Bill had no trouble identifying Lamar because of his familiar last name and they quickly made their historical connection. Bill is a full service car wash owner in Albuquerque and Lamar is a self serve car wash owner in El Paso, Texas. A strong professional friendship developed between the two car wash operators, encouraged by their active association membership. SCWA has over twelve hundred members which represent a six state area: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. Furthermore, both have been elected President of SCWA: Lamar in the year 2000 and in February 2004, Bill became the current president. Additional historical notes – Bill is the first president of the organization to be elected from the state of New Mexico; and both Bill and Lamar are Clovis High School graduates.
